Baby Medical Q&A, Issue #094 Read Aloud to Your Child When Young

Welcome to another edition of Baby Medical Q&A News.

Read aloud to your infant and toddler

Reading to your infant and toddler is fun - that quiet time you have together before sleep or during the afternoon. Research has shown that it is also important for the development of literacy skills and the cognitive and social-emotional development of children.

Reading proficiency by 3rd grade is a significant indicator of later academic success and infants and toddlers who are read to have better literacy skills when they reach school.

The evidence is so strong that the American Academy of Pediatrics is recommeding that pediatricians, during preventative health visits, actively encourage parents to read aloud to their infants and toddlers. Pediatricians are even providing free books for those who are least able to afford them.

This doesn't mean reading "War and Peace"to an infant. The reading should be age appropriate and for infants that is probably reading books with images and just saying the name and pointing. As children get a bit older then a story with lots of pictures is fun. Interact and get your toddler to point to the dog, the cat, the man with the funny hat or whatever. Engage them in the story as much as possible. Ask them to guess what happens next. Make reading fun.

And for those of you who have children who have now reached school age, consider giving their old books to a charity shop or even donate to a family with young children.

Some of my favorite children's books for toddlers are:

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle
  • Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy, by Lynley Dodd
  • The Wonky Donky, by Craig Smith
  • Any book by Roald Dahl
  • The Cat in the Hat, by Dr Suess

Have fun with books. Reading to your child is a beautiful gift. If you haven't started already, start today.
